Malus domestica 'Tompkins King'

Known simply as King, (or King of Tomkins County), this large, hearty apple has a yellow-green background with heavy red striping and blushing. They are excellent for eating fresh, for cidering, and for cooking. Will keep 2-3 months. Known before 1804. This highly prized apple is a tip bearer.

Tip bearer pruning note: Wait to prune until two inches of new growth has begun in spring. Then prune back to 6-8" of last years growth! Not suitable for espalier training.

This variety is a triploid and is pollen sterile. It will not pollinize other varieties.

USDA Zone: 4-9

Mature Height: 11' (Dwarf)

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: Late

Pollination: Triploid - Needs a Pollinizer but is Pollen Sterile
